Foreword

The Sixth Japan-Finland Joint Symposium on Optics in Engineering - OIE'05 - will be held in the International Conference Hall of Hokkai-Gakuen University, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan, on 26-28, September, 2005. It is an international joint meeting that follows up the line of the five symposia held so far in Lappeenranta, 1995; Tsukuba, 1997; Kajaani, 1999; Osaka, 2001; and Saariselkä 2003.

The aim of the series of symposia is to provide a timely forum for presenting latest novel and innovative works on new physics, technologies and device applications in optics-related fields, and to promote the interaction between Japanese and Finnish scientists who are working in the fields of pure and applied optics and photonics.

Scope

The workshop covers, but not restricted to, the following topics:

Scientific sessions

The scientific sessions are scheduled on 26 and 27 September. Oral sessions for invited papers and poster sessions for contributed papers are to be held. Instruction for presenters

Registration

Excursion

To promote further communication and collaboration among the participants, a one-day excursion is planned on 28 September, the last day of the syposium, to visit scenic area around Lake Toya and Mt. Usu that are located about 70 kilometers southeast of Sapporo. We will be back from the excursion to Sapporo late in the evening, but a flight reservation in the night of 28th may be risky if a traffic jam on the way back is taken into consideration. For details of the excursion, click here.

Banquet

Banquet is held in the evening of 26th. The venue is a bier restaurant, "Bier Keller Sapporo Kaitakushi ", located in " Sapporo Factory". A bus is provided by the secretariat from the Hokkai-Gakuen University to the banquet site. After the banquet, however, no bus transportation will be provide by the secretariat. Sapporo factory is a large complex of various facilities including shops, restauants, atrium, and cinema theaters. You can enjoy looking around them, and then can reach JR Sapporo station on foot since it is not very far from Sapporo Factory. Public bus or taxi is also available. In the banquet, informal clothes are allowed.

The main campus (Toyohira campus) includes most of faculties and is located just above 'Gakuen-mae' station of Toho subway line, thus having excellent accessibility. City of Sapporo

Located at 43 degrees north latitude and 141 degrees east longitude, Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido, the northmost island of the Japanese archipelago. Sapporo, one of Japan's major cities with a pupulation of over 1.83 million, plays a central role in the transportation, administration and economy of Hokkaido.

The 1972 Winter Olympic Games, the Asian Winter Games (1986 and 1990), the Winter Univasiad Sapporo in 1991, prelimiinary games of the 2002 FIFA World Cup and various other international events have been held here. It is also a city of international exchange, such as those with northern regions throughout the world.

Sapporo is very popular as a tourist spot. In June, trees are covered by a mantle of fresh green and tinted in autumnal colors in fall. Perople can enjoy sightseeing in the ciry throughout the year and, in particular, the Sapporo Snow Festival attracts a great number of trourists from the rest of the country, as well as from abroad.

Hokkaido prefecture

Hokkaido is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan and the Sea of Okhotsk. The island features a diversity of breathtaking mountain scenes, extensive wetlands, natural lakes and marshes with beautiful landscapes. It has a cool, dry climate, with little concern about rainy seasons or typhoons.

Although it is at the northern end of Japan, its latitude is about the same as those of many major American and European cities. With such geographic conditions, it is positioned as a base to connect the North with the Asian Pacific regions.
